A sound system for a transport hub is a commercial audio installation designed to deliver clear, intelligible speech announcements and zoned background music across public spaces — concourses, platforms, waiting halls, walkways and terminals.
Unlike domestic or office audio, transport audio has to perform in reverberant architecture, handle high ambient noise, and survive partially exposed environments where wind, moisture and temperature variation are routine.
A typical transport system has three components: a zone controller managing routing, scheduling and announcements; amplifiers; and weatherised loudspeakers with controlled directivity to preserve speech intelligibility in echoey spaces. Multi-zone capability is essential — platforms, concourses, retail concessions and back-of-house all need independent control.
Optimal Audio is now actively pursuing transport-hub installations following the launch of the Column Series, with Column 16 as the lead loudspeaker for these environments. Systems are configured via WebApp and installed by a trained AV installer.

Is Column suitable for outdoor station platforms?
Column 8 and Column 16 are rated IP54 as standard, with weatherisation kit included in the box. Suitable for covered platforms, walkways and concourses where exposure is partial — rain ingress from wind, dust, temperature variation. For fully outdoor, fully exposed deployments without overhead cover, a higher IP rating may be required; speak to your distributor or our technical team.
How does Column handle the reverberant acoustics of station concourses?
Column’s narrow vertical directivity (7° on Column 16, 5° on Column 8) reduces energy reaching reflective ceilings and upper architectural surfaces. This preserves speech intelligibility in reverberant spaces. The factory-tuned Speech preset further optimises for vocal clarity.
What ambient noise levels can Column handle?
Column 16 delivers 113 dB continuous SPL, with peak headroom for transient announcement spikes. Sufficient for most public-transport environments. Final coverage and SPL design should be specified against the specific venue’s ambient noise floor.
Can announcements be scheduled differently for peak and off-peak hours?
Yes. The Optimal Audio WebApp supports time-of-day scheduling for level, EQ behaviour and zone activation. Different audio behaviours can be programmed for peak commuting hours, off-peak periods, weekends and overnight quiet hours.
How does Column integrate with existing PA / VA systems?
Column is a passive loudspeaker driven by SmartAmp, which accepts standard line-level and networked audio input and integrates with most PA / VA signal chains. For specific integration with fire-alarm-linked VA or life-safety systems, please consult with your distributor or our technical team.
What’s the typical install time for Column in a transport venue?
Column ships with all standard installation accessories included — wall bracket, safety strap, IP54 weatherisation kit, spare grille cloth — so install-day workflow is materially faster than competitor products that require accessory specification and ordering. Specific timelines depend on venue, scale and electrical infrastructure.
Does Optimal Audio have transport-segment installation references?
Transport is a new application area for Optimal Audio, opened up by the launch of the Column Series. We are actively pursuing transport-hub projects from 2026 onwards. Can Column cabinets be painted to match transport architecture branding?
Yes. Column 8 and Column 16 ship in black or white, and the cabinets are paintable to match surrounding architecture or station branding. Care should be taken with paint specification to maintain IP54 rating; consult with your distributor on appropriate paint products.
